1.000 Dollars Dollar (Issued 1986)

Surviving examples of the 1986 Singapore one-thousand-dollar note from the Ship Series are now considerably scarce in the United Kingdom, partly because the high denomination meant far fewer were ever produced relative to lower values, and partly because Singapore’s successive currency reforms prompted most notes to be exchanged and withdrawn from circulation. The Board of Commissioners of Currency recalled the entire 1984–1999 Ship Series progressively, and high-value notes in particular were surrendered in large numbers by businesses and banks, leaving relatively few in private hands today. Historians of Southeast Asian monetary policy regard this series as a pivotal document of Singapore’s extraordinary economic transformation during the 1980s, when the city-state was cementing its position as one of the world’s foremost container-shipping and trading hubs.

On the front, the dominant central vignette is a finely engraved scene depicting a large container ship at berth alongside a busy port facility, with towering gantry cranes visible in the background loading and stacking stacked coloured cargo containers. The scene is rendered with considerable engraving detail, capturing the industrial scale of Singapore’s port operations, and is captioned below with the words “CONTAINER SHIP” in small lettering. The overall colour scheme of the face is a rich combination of blue and violet, with underlying guilloché patterning providing a textured background across the entire note. In the upper left corner sits the Singapore state coat of arms, depicted with fine detail including the lion and tiger supporters, the crescent and five stars, and the motto shield, all rendered in blue. The word “SINGAPORE” runs prominently in bold capital letters across the upper portion of the note, accompanied by the name in Malay as “SINGAPURA” and in Chinese and Tamil script, reflecting Singapore’s four official languages. The denomination “$1000” appears in bold numerals in the upper right corner and again in larger format in the lower left. The full written denomination “ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS” is printed in large, commanding typography in the lower right area of the note in a deep blue against a lighter background. A serial number, “A/1 609669,” appears twice — once in the upper right area below the denomination and once in the lower left — printed in red. To the right of centre, the printed text “This note is legal tender” appears in italic script, beneath which sits a manuscript-style signature over the printed designation “MINISTER FOR FINANCE.” The right-hand side of the note incorporates decorative elements including a stylised floral or orchid motif rendered in pale blue-green, and small fish-like decorative engravings appear in the lower right corner, consistent with the aquatic and maritime theme of the series.

The reverse of the note is executed predominantly in shades of deep blue and violet on a pale lilac-white ground. The central focus of the reverse is a large, detailed engraved panoramic scene of a working port, showing multiple vessels docked alongside substantial quayside infrastructure, with tall gantry cranes, warehouses, and stacked freight containers all rendered with fine crosshatched engraving work that conveys both depth and industrial complexity. This port scene occupies the right and central portions of the reverse. To the left of this central vignette, the design features an elaborate guilloché rosette pattern at its heart surrounded by a decorative floral wreath incorporating what appear to be orchid blossoms, all finely engraved in blue. Small fish or sea-creature motifs are visible in the lower left area, continuing the maritime decorative vocabulary of the series. The word “SINGAPORE” is printed in bold capital letters across the lower centre of the note, with “$1000” appearing in the upper left corner and again in a stylised rectangular frame in the lower right. The overall layout of the reverse is clean and formally balanced, with the geometric border framing providing a structured edge to the composition.
