10.000 Dollars Dollar (Issued 1987)

Issued during one of the most prosperous decades in Singapore’s economic history, the 10,000 Dollar note of 1987 stands as the highest denomination produced under the Board of Commissioners of Currency during the celebrated Ship Series, which ran from 1984 to 1999. Printed at a time when Singapore was cementing its reputation as one of Asia’s foremost financial centres, this note reflects the city-state’s maritime identity and national ambition through its intricate, multi-layered design. The note was officially withdrawn from circulation as Singapore transitioned to subsequent currency series, and it remains one of the most visually complex pieces from its era. Its sheer denomination made it notable in everyday commerce, functioning primarily within high-value banking and institutional transactions.

On the front, the dominant central image is a large, finely engraved bulk carrier vessel rendered in deep red and rust tones, sailing across stylised waves that occupy much of the lower half of the note. The ship is labelled “BULK CARRIER” beneath it, and the hull bears the name “NEPTUNE GARNET” in small lettering. Behind the ship, a detailed skyline of Singapore’s cityscape stretches across the upper-centre of the note, depicted in cool blue-grey tones with fine line engraving conveying the urban architecture of the period. The name “SINGAPORE” appears prominently at the top in large serif lettering in red, flanked by the country name repeated in Malay (“SINGAPURA”), Chinese (新加坡), and Tamil (சிங்கப்பூர்), reflecting Singapore’s four official languages. The denomination “$10000” appears in bold numerals at both the upper right and the lower left, with “TEN THOUSAND DOLLARS” printed in large red block capitals to the lower right. The Singapore coat of arms appears in the upper left corner, depicted in red and gold tones with fine detail. To the right of centre, a decorative panel features a stylised dragon and a fish motif rendered in yellow and orange, accompanied by the legal tender declaration reading “This note is legal tender.” The serial number “AA276857” is printed twice — once horizontally in the lower left area and once vertically along the right margin. A security thread is embedded within the paper, visible as a dark vertical strip. The overall colour palette of the front combines deep reds, warm oranges, and muted blues, with guilloché-style geometric patterning forming the background across the entire note surface.

The reverse features an engraved scene depicting the National Day Parade, captioned at the bottom as “NATIONAL DAY PARADE 1983.” The scene shows a grand civic building — identifiable as the City Hall of Singapore — rendered in warm orange-red engraving, with palm trees flanking the structure and a large crowd of uniformed participants filling the foreground. The parade scene is richly detailed, with rows of marching figures, vehicles, and spectators captured in fine intaglio line work. Above the building, text reads “TOGETHER EXCELLENCE SINGAPORE” in small lettering along the top edge of the vignette. To the left of the central scene, a large ornate floral medallion is rendered in white and light tones against the orange background, featuring intricate guilloché patterning and a central motif of stylised flowers or foliage. The word “SINGAPORE” appears in large red letters across the lower centre of the note. The denomination “$10000” is printed in red at both the upper left and lower right corners. A small fish motif, consistent with that seen on the front, appears in the lower left. The reverse background carries sweeping diagonal bands in pale peach and cream tones, overlaid with fine repetitive geometric patterning. The text “PRINTED BY THE DE LA RUE GIORI CURRENCY LIMITED” appears in small print along the bottom edge, identifying the security printer responsible for the note’s production.
