25 Dollars Dollar (Issued 1972)

Issued in 1972 during Singapore’s formative years as an independent republic, the 25 Dollar note from the Orchid Series represents one of the earliest chapters in the young nation’s monetary identity, established under the Board of Commissioners of Currency just five years after independence. The series was introduced in 1967 as Singapore sought to assert its sovereign financial standing, and the distinctive orchid motif was chosen as a direct expression of national pride, reflecting the country’s renowned horticultural heritage. By 1972, the series was well established in everyday commerce, and this denomination occupied a significant place in Singapore’s circulating currency. The note was eventually withdrawn at the end of the Orchid Series run in 1976, making it a tangible record of early Singaporean monetary history.

On the front, the design is dominated by a boldly rendered spray of yellow Dendrobium orchids, drawn in fine intaglio engraving with warm golden-yellow petals and small reddish-brown centres, set against a softly shaded lavender and pale green background. The orchids occupy the central portion of the note, their stems and leaves rendered with delicate botanical precision in green tones. To the upper right, the Singapore state coat of arms is prominently displayed in brown engraving, featuring a crescent moon and five stars on a red shield, supported by a lion on the left and a tiger on the right, with the national motto “MAJULAH SINGAPURA” inscribed on the banner below. The word “SINGAPORE” is printed in bold dark brown serif lettering across the upper portion of the note, flanked by the denomination “$25” in the upper left and upper right corners. The legal tender declaration “THIS NOTE IS LEGAL TENDER FOR $25” is printed in small text directly beneath “SINGAPORE” at the top. The serial number A/36 724649 appears twice in dark brown numerals, once in the upper left area and once in the lower right, in a clear upright typeface. Across the lower register, the words “TWENTY FIVE DOLLARS” are printed in large, bold dark brown lettering, with a cursive signature to the right attributed to the Minister for Finance, accompanied by a small red seal stamp. The left margin carries the word “SINGAPORE” printed vertically in dark brown, alongside what appears to be the Malay text “SINGAPURA” also running vertically. Intricate guilloché patterns in pale mauve and green form a circular watermark medallion on the left-hand side of the note, and a finely engraved dark brown decorative border with geometric repeating motifs frames the entire composition. The right-hand edge features a distinctive dark brown engraved panel of vertical scroll and wave patterns, adding structural depth to the design.

The reverse features a detailed engraved view of the former Singapore City Hall, a grand neoclassical colonial building rendered in rich brown and warm ochre tones. The building is depicted with its imposing colonnaded façade, prominent central dome, and symmetrical wings, set within landscaped grounds with trees to either side, rendered with fine cross-hatching and tonal variation that gives the scene considerable depth and architectural precision. The word “SINGAPORE” appears in bold dark brown capitals across a patterned band at the top of the note, with “$25” printed to its right. The denomination “$25” also appears in the lower left corner, and the words “TWENTY FIVE DOLLARS” are displayed in bold lettering across the lower centre of the note. A repeating geometric border in dark brown frames the upper and lower edges of the reverse, echoing the decorative patterning seen on the front. The background carries faint green and ochre security tinting across the paper field, and a small text credit line appears in fine print at the lower edge of the central vignette.
