5 Slovak Korun (Issued 1995)

The 5 korun coin was a higher circulating denomination of the Slovak Koruna, the currency of Slovakia from 1993 until the euro changeover in 2009. Struck in nickel-plated steel with a bright silvery finish, it had a solid, weighty feel and a plain edge, and was widely used for everyday purchases. Its bold reverse design made it easy to recognise among mixed change.

On the obverse, the coin shows the Slovak coat of arms — a double cross on three hills within a shield — above the legend “SLOVENSKÁ REPUBLIKA”, with the year “1995” and small mint marks at the foot inside a raised rim.

On the reverse appears a design based on an ancient Celtic Biatec coin, showing a rider on horseback with the inscription “BIATEC”, set beside the large denomination “5 Sk”. The motif recalls the silver coins struck by Celtic tribes in the region more than two thousand years ago.
