10 Stotinov Slovenia (Issued 1993)

The ten stotinov coin dates from the first years of Slovenian independence, when the tolar and its stotin subdivisions replaced the earlier Yugoslav currency. Struck in lightweight aluminium, it has a pale grey-white colour and feels notably light in the hand, a low-value minor coin intended for small everyday change. Its thin flan and simple design reflect its modest role, and the entire tolar system was later withdrawn when Slovenia adopted the euro in 2007.

On the obverse, a large numeral “10” sits within a plain square outline at the centre. The legend “REPUBLIKA SLOVENIJA” curves up the left side and “DESET STOTINOV” (ten stotinov) runs down the right, with the year “1993” beside the square, all enclosed by a raised rim.

On the reverse appears a proteus, the pale, blind cave salamander native to Slovenia’s karst caves, shown swimming with its slender body, external gills and delicate limbs. The numeral “10” stands in the upper field and the species name “PROTEUS ANGUINUS” is inscribed in raised capitals along the lower edge, the animal forming part of the wildlife series that ran across the early tolar coinage.
