20 Slovenian Tolarjev (Issued 2005)

The 20 tolarjev belonged to the Slovenian tolar coinage, the national currency used from 1991 until Slovenia adopted the euro on 1 January 2007. It was one of the larger denominations introduced in the redesigned series of the early 2000s, struck in a copper-nickel alloy that gave it a bright silvery finish and a light but firm feel in the hand. The plain, smooth edge and simple lettering made it quick to recognise among the mixed change of the period.

On the obverse, a large numeral 20 fills the centre of the field, encircled by the legend “REPUBLIKA SLOVENIJA DVAJSET TOLARJEV” in raised capitals, with the year 2005 curving along the lower edge. The lettering follows the rim in a clean, unadorned arc.

On the reverse, the coin shows a white stork standing on its long legs, its head lowered, rendered in fine relief. The numeral 20 sits at the upper left and the Latin species name “CICONIA CICONIA” runs down the right side, part of the wildlife theme that ran through the Slovenian tolar coin series.
