20 Stotinov (Slovenia, Issued 1993)

The 20 stotinov was a small subdivision of the Slovenian Tolar, worth twenty hundredths of a tolar, issued from the first years of Slovenian independence. Struck in lightweight aluminium with a pale silvery finish, it had a very light feel and a plain edge, and served for small everyday change before Slovenia moved to the euro in 2007.

On the obverse, the numeral “20” is set within a square frame at the centre, encircled by the legend “REPUBLIKA SLOVENIJA” and the words “DVAJSET STOTINOV” — twenty stotinov — with the year “1993” to the right inside a raised rim.

On the reverse appears a long-eared owl perched with its distinctive ear tufts and large eyes, identified by the scientific name “ASIO OTUS” above, with the numeral “20” at the left. The bird belongs to the wildlife series that ran across Slovenia’s tolar coinage.
