50 Slovenian Tolarjev (Issued 2005)

The 50 tolarjev was the highest circulating value of the Slovenian tolar coinage, the currency used from 1991 until Slovenia joined the euro on 1 January 2007. Part of the larger redesigned series issued in the early 2000s, it was struck in a copper-nickel alloy with a bright, silvery appearance and a solid, weighty feel. Its plain edge and bold numerals made it easy to pick out from lower-value change.

On the obverse, a large numeral 50 dominates the field, framed by the legend “REPUBLIKA SLOVENIJA PETDESET TOLARJEV” in raised capitals, with the year 2005 curving along the lower rim.

On the reverse, the coin depicts a powerfully modelled bull, shown charging with its head lowered and horns forward. The Latin species name “TAURUS TAURUS” arcs across the top and the numeral 50 sits at the foot, continuing the native-animal theme that unified the Slovenian tolar coin designs.
