50 Stotinov (Slovenia, Issued 1993)

The 50 stotinov was a small subdivision of the Slovenian Tolar, worth half a tolar, issued from the earliest years of Slovenian independence. Struck in lightweight aluminium with a pale matte-silver appearance, it had a very light feel and a plain edge, and was a common piece of small change during the tolar era before the euro changeover in 2007.

On the obverse, the numeral “50” sits within a square frame at the centre, framed by the legend “REPUBLIKA SLOVENIJA” and the words “PETDESET STOTINOV” — fifty stotinov — with the year “1993” to the right inside a raised rim.

On the reverse appears a honeybee shown in detailed relief with outstretched wings, identified by the scientific name “APIS MELLIFERA” and the numeral “50” at the left. The bee is part of the wildlife series that featured across Slovenia’s tolar coins.
