1/2 Cent South Africa (Issued 1971)

The half cent was the smallest denomination of South Africa’s decimal coinage, introduced after the country switched from pounds to rands and cents in 1961. Struck in bronze, it has a warm reddish-brown colour and a small, thin flan, and was a low-value everyday coin that was eventually discontinued and withdrawn as its purchasing power faded. On the obverse appears the old coat of arms of the Republic of South Africa — a central shield of four quarters flanked by two antelope supporters, with a crest above and a scroll bearing the motto below. The bilingual country name “SOUTH AFRICA” and “SUID-AFRIKA” curves around the upper field, with the date “1971” at the foot between small dots.

On the reverse, two Cape sparrows perch on a thorny twig, with the fraction “½” set above them between their heads. The naturalistic bird design, carrying the small designer’s initials in the field, was the standard motif for the half cent and gives the little coin its distinctive character.
