This large-type 1 Cent is a circulation coin of the South African Rand and has since been withdrawn. Struck between 1970 and 1989, it was made from bronze (95% copper, 4.5% zinc and 0.5% tin), giving it a warm copper appearance. The round coin weighs 3.0 g and measures 19.05 mm in diameter. It was the base denomination of its series in everyday use.

The obverse shows the South African coat of arms with the motto, an Afrikaans and English legend running around the design and the date placed below.
