This 1 Cent is a circulation coin of the South African Rand and has since been withdrawn. Struck between 1997 and 2000, it was made from copper-plated steel, giving it a copper tone over a steel core. It is the smallest coin of its series, weighing 1.5 g and measuring 15.0 mm across. It saw everyday use as the base denomination before being retired.
The obverse shows the arms of South Africa, with the country name in Ndebele placed above.
The reverse depicts Cape sparrows, with the denomination below.
