1 Cent, South Africa (Issued 1993)

The South African 1 cent was the smallest decimal denomination in everyday use, circulating widely before the low-value bronze coins were withdrawn and eventually demonetised. This 1993 piece belongs to the pre-2000 series, struck in copper-plated steel that gives it a warm reddish-brown colour and a light, thin feel. The edge is plain, and heavy handling has left many surviving examples toned and worn.

On the obverse appears the older national coat of arms of South Africa, with two supporting figures flanking a central shield beneath a crest, the motto “EX UNITATE VIRES” on a scroll below. The bilingual country name “SOUTH AFRICA · SUID AFRIKA” runs around the rim, with the date 1993 at the foot.

On the reverse, two small Cape sparrows are shown perched on a sprig, one either side of a large numeral 1 with the letter “c” for cent. The birds are finely detailed, a design associated with the country’s low-value coinage of the period.
