This large-type 1 Rand is a circulation coin of the South African Rand and has since been withdrawn. Struck between 1977 and 1989, it was made from nickel, giving it a bright silvery appearance. It is a sizeable round coin, weighing 12.0 g and measuring 31.0 mm in diameter. It served as a workhorse denomination in general circulation before being replaced by later designs.

The obverse shows the South African coat of arms with the Latin motto “Ex Unitate Vires”, meaning “Power Through Unity”. The country name is given in both Afrikaans and English.

The reverse features a springbok, the animal emblem of South Africa. The inscription “Soli Deo gloria” also appears; one of the five basic beliefs of the Protestant Reformation, it means “Glory to God alone”.
