The South African 10 cents was a golden-coloured coin of the post-2000 decimal series, part of the coinage bearing the country’s new national coat of arms. This 2002 piece is struck in bronze-plated steel, giving it a warm yellow-gold appearance, a light weight and a plain edge. It saw wide everyday use as a small unit of change.

On the obverse is the newer coat of arms of South Africa, with a secretary bird spreading its wings above a central shield, a rising sun above and the motto “!KE E:/XARRA//KE” on a band beneath. The country name is shown in two official-language forms, “Afrika” and “Dzonga”, with the date 2002 across the top.

On the reverse, arum lilies are shown with their broad leaves and slender flowers, set beside a large numeral 10 and the letter “c”, the plant motif finely modelled in relief.
