10 South African Rand Banknote (Rhino Type 1993)

10 Rand (Issued 1993-1999)

South Africa’s transition to democracy in 1994, when Nelson Mandela became the country’s first democratically elected president following the end of apartheid, defined the era in which this banknote circulated. The South African Reserve Bank issued this series during one of the most transformative periods in the nation’s modern history, as the country dismantled decades of racial segregation and rejoined the international community. This 10 Rand note entered circulation during those landmark years and was eventually withdrawn as South Africa moved towards successive redesigns of its currency. It stands as a tangible artefact from a nation remaking itself on the world stage.

On the front, the dominant design element is a large, highly detailed intaglio engraving of a white rhinoceros head occupying the right-hand portion of the note, rendered in deep green tones with extraordinary fine-line detail across the animal’s textured skin, horn, and facial features. Behind the rhinoceros, a mid-ground scene depicts a group of rhinoceroses in an open landscape, executed in lighter green and olive tones that give the composition a sense of depth and distance. The background across much of the face is a warm, pale cream with subtle guilloché patterning in green, and a distinctive teal-green block panel appears in the lower left quadrant, filled with a repeating rosette guilloché design. To the left of centre, a stylised orange and red rosette motif incorporating the letter “R” is printed in a sunburst pattern. A signature appears beneath this rosette, attributed to the President Governor of the South African Reserve Bank. The serial number AA6595606 A appears in blue print both at the lower right and in the upper left region of the note. The issuing authority is stated in both Afrikaans — “SUID-AFRIKAANSE RESERWEBANK” — in blue text along the upper portion, and in English — “SOUTH AFRICAN RESERVE BANK” — along the lower portion. The denomination “TEN RAND” is printed vertically in blue along both the left and right margins, and the numeral “10” appears in the lower right corner within a geometric diamond-shaped guilloché rosette in orange.

The reverse features an engraved composition dominated by the head of a large ram, depicted in fine intaglio line work in deep green, with the animal’s curved horn rendered in precise, layered detail. To the right of the ram’s head, a large circular sunflower motif is printed in a lighter blue-green tone, its petals radiating outward in a stylised guilloché-influenced design. Beneath the central imagery, a pastoral landscape scene is engraved in green and olive tones, depicting a herd of springbok grazing across an open plain with low hills in the background. The large numeral “10” is printed in bold green at the lower centre of the note, beneath the animal imagery. Along the upper edge, the Afrikaans text “SUID-AFRIKAANSE RESERWEBANK” appears in blue, and along the lower portion the English “SOUTH AFRICAN RESERVE BANK” is repeated. The denomination “TIEN RAND” is printed vertically in blue along the left margin, and “TEN RAND” and the numeral “10” appear along the right margin. A green guilloché rosette incorporating a stylised “R” motif is visible at the lower right. The overall colour palette across the reverse is a consistent mid-to-deep green with pale cream paper showing through the lighter areas of the design.
