This ½ Cent is a circulation coin of the South African Rand and has since been withdrawn. Struck between 1970 and 1983, it was made from bronze, giving it a warm copper-toned appearance. It is a small round coin, weighing 2.0 g and measuring 16.21 mm in diameter. As the smallest denomination of its series, it saw everyday use before being retired.

The obverse shows the South African coat of arms with the motto in Latin, “Power through Unity”, surrounded by the date and a bilingual English and Afrikaans legend.
