Struck between 2002 and 2014, it was made from nickel-plated copper, giving it a bright silvery finish over a copper core. The round coin weighs 5.5 g and measures 23.0 mm across. It circulates as a mid-value denomination in everyday transactions.
The obverse shows the South African coat of arms inscribed within a square, with the motto in Bochimans (Khoisan). On both sides the country name is displayed in Zulu and Xhosa.
The reverse depicts a greater kudu alongside the value.
