20 Rand (Issued 1984-1993)

The 20 Rand note issued between 1984 and 1993 belongs to the Second Series introduced by the South African Reserve Bank from 1976, a programme of banknote design that sought to embed national identity and historical heritage into everyday currency during a particularly turbulent period in South Africa’s political history. The series carried forward the convention of depicting figures central to the founding of European settlement at the Cape, grounding the nation’s monetary identity in its colonial past. Printed across nearly a decade of issue, notes from this series circulated widely before being withdrawn from legal tender status. Today they represent a tangible record of South Africa’s mid-to-late apartheid-era monetary policy and design tradition.

On the front, the dominant feature is an engraved portrait of Jan van Riebeeck, the Dutch East India Company commander who established the first European settlement at the Cape of Good Hope in 1652, depicted in a classic seventeenth-century style with long dark hair, a white lace collar, and period dress rendered in fine intaglio engraving. The portrait occupies the left-centre of the note against a pale, warm pinkish-cream background with subtle guilloché patterning visible across much of the field. To the upper right, the issuing authority is clearly identified in bold serif typography as “SOUTH AFRICAN RESERVE BANK,” with the bilingual promise-to-pay text beneath it reading in both English and Afrikaans: “I PROMISE TO PAY THE BEARER ON DEMAND AT PRETORIA, TWENTY RAND” and “EK BELOOF OM AANVRAAG TE BETAAL AAN TOONDER TE PRETORIA, TWINTIG RAND,” followed by a third line attributing the note to the bank in both languages. The serial number D2/14 414992 appears twice — once in the upper right area and again at the lower left — printed in a dark reddish-brown ink. The denomination is stated prominently in large serif lettering as “RAND” across the lower central portion of the note, with the bilingual denomination “TWENTY / TWINTIG” in bold block capitals to the lower left. The issuing bank’s name also appears at the foot of the note in Afrikaans as “SUID-AFRIKAANSE RESERWEBANK.” A Governor’s signature appears centrally, attributed to Gerhard de Kock, with the titles “GOVERNOR / PRESIDENT” printed in both official languages. Along the far right edge, a vertical panel of dark, intricate guilloché scrollwork in deep brown provides a decorative security border, incorporating the numeral “20” within the design at both the top and bottom of that panel.

The reverse is printed in a warm sepia-brown monochrome palette and presents a richly detailed historical scene of considerable engraving quality. The central and left portions of the reverse are dominated by a dramatic intaglio scene depicting a fleet of tall-masted sailing vessels of the Dutch East India Company era, rendered with meticulous detail showing their rigging, sails, flags, and hulls as they sail upon open water. The largest of the ships occupies the centre of the composition, flanked by two smaller vessels to its left, evoking the historical arrival of Dutch seafarers at the Cape. To the right of the sailing scene, the full South African coat of arms is prominently depicted in fine engraved detail, showing a shield supported on either side by a springbok and an oryx, surmounted by a crowned lion holding a ship’s anchor above the shield, with floral and foliate elements flanking the supporters. A scroll beneath the coat of arms bears the Latin motto “EX UNITATE VIRES,” meaning “Unity is Strength.” To the far left of the reverse, a square panel of complex guilloché lacework in the same sepia tone frames the numeral “20” in white relief at its upper left corner.
