This nickel 5 Cents is a circulation coin of the South African Rand and has since been withdrawn. Struck between 1970 and 1989, it was made from nickel with a bright, durable surface. It is a small round coin, weighing 2.5 g and measuring 17.35 mm across. It circulated as a minor denomination during its years of issue.
The obverse shows the South African coat of arms with the Latin motto “Ex Unitate Vires”.
The reverse depicts a blue crane, the national bird of South Africa.
