The five rand is South Africa’s highest-value everyday circulation coin, redesigned as a bimetallic piece to combat forgery. It has a golden nickel-brass centre within a silvery outer ring, and its edge carries the repeated micro-lettering “SARB” (South African Reserve Bank) as a security feature. On the obverse appears the national coat of arms adopted in 2000 — a secretary bird with outstretched wings above a rising sun, over a shield bearing two San rock-art figures, flanked by elephant tusks, wheat ears and a protea, with the motto “!KE E: /XARRA //KE” on the scroll below. The country name is shown in Tsonga (“Afrika Dzonga”) and Zulu (“Ningizimu Afrika”) around the ring, with the date “2004” at the top.

On the reverse, a blue wildebeest is shown in mid-stride across the central disc, its heavy head and curved horns lowered. The large numeral “5” dominates the golden centre and the word “RAND” curves around the lower part of the silvery ring, framing the animal above a strip of grassy ground.
