This large-type 50 Cents is a circulation coin of the South African Rand and has since been withdrawn. Struck between 1970 and 1990, it was made from nickel, giving it a durable silvery finish. The round coin weighs 9.5 g and measures 27.85 mm across. It circulated widely as a mid-value denomination before being retired.

The obverse shows the South African coat of arms with the Latin motto “Ex Unitate Vires”, meaning “Power Through Unity”. The country name is given in both English and Afrikaans.

The reverse displays three flowers, all native to South Africa: from left to right, an Arum Lily, a Lily of the Nile and a Bird-of-Paradise. Together they celebrate the country’s distinctive flora.
