50 Cents South Africa (Old Coat of Arms Type, Issued 1984)

This fifty cent coin comes from the pre-1994 decimal coinage of the Republic of South Africa, the series that carried the old national coat of arms. Struck in nickel with a bright silvery-white surface and a milled edge, it is a solid, larger circulating coin, one of the higher minor denominations of its day. Its floral reverse belongs to the botanical theme running across South Africa’s coinage of the period, and this example is dated 1984.

On the obverse appears the old coat of arms of South Africa — a quartered central shield flanked by two antelope supporters, with a lion crest above and a scroll bearing the motto “UNITATE VIRES” (unity is strength) beneath. The bilingual country name “SOUTH AFRICA” and “SUID-AFRIKA” curves around the design, with the date “1984” at the foot between small dots.

On the reverse, a group of indigenous South African flowers is shown, including a tall-stemmed agapanthus bloom, arum lilies and a strelitzia (crane flower) among their leaves. The large numeral “50” is set at the centre of the arrangement, with the designer’s initials “T.S.” below, forming the distinctive floral motif of the fifty cent coin.
