1 South Korean Won (Issued 1968)

The 1 won is the smallest denomination of the South Korean won, introduced in 1966 as part of the country’s decimal coinage. Struck in aluminium, it is extremely light and thin, with a bright silvery-white colour and a plain edge. Although still nominally legal tender, the coin quickly fell out of practical use as prices rose, and it is now rarely seen in circulation.

On the obverse, the coin shows a spray of the rose of Sharon — the mugunghwa, national flower of South Korea — with the value “1” and the issuing authority inscribed in Korean. The delicate flower fills much of the small field.

On the reverse, the denomination is given as a large numeral 1 with the word “WON”, together with the year of minting and the name of the Bank of Korea in Korean script.
