10 South Korean Won (Issued 1999)

The 10 won is a low-value denomination of the South Korean won, part of the country’s decimal coinage. This 1999 piece belongs to the older, larger type struck in a brass alloy, giving it a warm bronze-gold colour, a light feel and a plain edge. It circulated widely for small change before a smaller, lighter 10 won coin was introduced in 2006.

On the obverse, the coin shows the Dabotap, the ornate stone pagoda at Bulguksa Temple in Gyeongju, one of Korea’s most celebrated works of Buddhist architecture. The value “10” and the issuing authority are inscribed in Korean around the pagoda.

On the reverse, the denomination is given as a large numeral 10 with the word “WON”, together with the year of minting and the name of the Bank of Korea in Korean script.
