100 Won — Admiral Yi Sun-sin (Issued 1970-1982)

This 100 Won is an earlier type of the South Korean won’s 100 Won coin, struck between 1970 and 1982. It is made from copper-nickel, an alloy of 75% copper and 25% nickel, giving it a durable silvery appearance. The coin is round, weighs 5.42 grams and measures 24 mm across. It circulated widely before being replaced by the later design and has since been withdrawn.

The obverse depicts Admiral Yi Sun-sin (1545-1598), Korea’s national hero, with the Korean legend “Bank of Korea” below. The lettering reads “백 원 한국은행”, meaning “One hundred Won Bank of Korea”. The design was cut by the engraver Kang Bak.

The reverse shows the denomination in numerals above the date within a circular design. The lettering reads “100 1971”, stating the face value and year, and this side was also engraved by Kang Bak.
