50 Won — Rice Ear, FAO Issue (Issued 1972-1982)

This 50 Won is an earlier type of the South Korean won’s 50 Won coin, struck between 1972 and 1982 as a Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) issue. It is made from nickel brass, an alloy of 70% copper, 18% zinc and 12% nickel, giving it a pale golden tone. The coin is round, weighs 4 grams and measures 21.60 mm in diameter. It has since been withdrawn from circulation.

The obverse features a rice ear with the value in Hangul, reflecting its FAO agricultural theme. The lettering reads “오십원”, meaning “Fifty won”. The design was cut by the engraver Kang Bak.

The reverse shows a large central numeral with the date above. The lettering reads “1974 50 한국은행”, giving the year, the face value and The Bank of Korea as issuer, and this side was also engraved by Kang Bak.
