The 1 peseta was the base unit of Spain’s peseta coinage, the national currency used until it was replaced by the euro in 2002. This late type, produced from 1982 to 1989, is struck in aluminium, making it exceptionally light and thin, with a bright silvery colour and a plain edge. Its small size and low weight made it easy to accumulate as loose change.
On the obverse appears a portrait of King Juan Carlos I facing left, with the legend “JUAN CARLOS I REY DE ESPAÑA” around the rim and the year of minting below.
On the reverse, the denomination is given as a large numeral 1 with the crowned coat of arms of Spain and the word “PESETA”, the design filling the small field within the raised rim.
