200 Spanish Pesetas (Issued 1987)

The 200 peseta coin was one of the higher everyday denominations of Spain’s peseta system, which served as the national currency until it was replaced by the euro in 2002. Struck in a cupronickel alloy with a pale silvery finish, it was made in a distinctive rounded heptagonal shape that set it apart by touch from the round coins in circulation. Its bold size and seven-sided outline made it easy to pick out in a handful of change, and it circulated heavily through the late 1980s and 1990s.

On the obverse, the coin carries the bare-headed portrait of King Juan Carlos I facing left, surrounded by the legend “JUAN CARLOS I REY DE ESPAÑA” with the date “1987” at the foot between small dividing dots. The portrait fills the field within the heptagonal raised rim.

On the reverse, the large denomination “200” is shown above the word “PESETAS”, with a leafy sprig arching over the numerals and a second branch below. A small crowned “M” mintmark for the Royal Mint in Madrid appears to the lower right, all contained within the seven-sided border.
