This two thousand peseta coin is a silver commemorative issued in 1997 to mark the 450th anniversary of the birth of Miguel de Cervantes, author of Don Quixote. On the reverse, Cervantes’ celebrated characters ride across the field: Don Quixote on his horse with lance raised, followed by Sancho Panza on his donkey. The value “2000” over “PTAS” is set at the upper right, a small oval medallion portrait of Cervantes sits at the left above the crowned “M” mint mark, and the dates “1547” and “1997” flank an open book along the base.
