5 Spanish Pesetas coin

5 Spanish Pesetas (Issued 1994)

The 5 pesetas, long known to Spaniards as the “duro”, was a much-handled denomination of the peseta coinage. This 1994 example comes from the Autonomous Communities series, a run of coins each honouring a different Spanish region. It is struck in an aluminium-bronze alloy with a golden colour, a light weight and a plain edge, and circulated until the euro replaced the peseta in 2002.

On the obverse is a regional architectural monument, framed by the legend “ESPAÑA” and the year 1994.

On the reverse, a traditional Aragonese dancer is depicted mid-step in folk costume, with the value “5 PTAS”, the regional name “ARAGON” and the crowned M mintmark of the Madrid mint.
