This one rupee coin was issued by Ceylon, the island now known as Sri Lanka, and carries the date 1971. Struck in a copper-nickel alloy with a warm tone, it was a large, dignified circulation piece that carried the highest everyday denomination of the late Ceylonese coinage. Its edge is reeded and the design is framed by a beaded border.
On the obverse, the coin displays the armorial ensign of Ceylon: a lion passant holding a sword, set within a beaded circle ringed by a band of rays. A stylised crown appears above, and a scrolled ribbon beneath carries the country’s name in Sinhala script.
On the reverse, the denomination is set out in the island’s three languages, reading “ONE RUPEE” in English above the year “1971”, with the corresponding Sinhala and Tamil inscriptions. A lotus flower rests at the top of the field and the name of the issuing state runs around the upper rim in Sinhala characters, all enclosed by a beaded border.
