50 Cents, Sri Lanka (Issued 1982)
The 50 cents was a subsidiary coin of the Sri Lankan rupee, worth half a rupee and used for everyday change in the decades before the smallest denominations were retired. This 1982 piece is struck in a copper-nickel alloy, giving it a silvery colour, a light feel and a reeded edge.
On the obverse appears the Armorial Ensign of Sri Lanka, a lion holding a sword within a ring of lotus petals, topped by a dharmachakra wheel and set above a punkalasa vase, flanked by the sun and moon.
On the reverse, the denomination is given as a large numeral 50 with the value written in Sinhala, Tamil and English as “FIFTY CENTS”, surrounded by a decorative floral border, with the year 1982 at the foot.
