10 Rappen coin Switzerland

10 Rappen Switzerland (Issued 1979)

The 10 rappen is a small everyday coin of the Swiss Confederation, one of the longest-lived circulating designs in the world, its pattern essentially unchanged since the nineteenth century. Struck in cupro-nickel with a plain edge, this example is dated 1979. It was minted for the smallest daily transactions across Switzerland.

On the obverse appears the head of Libertas, a female personification of liberty, facing right with her hair bound and dressed, wearing a diadem inscribed “LIBERTAS”. The legend “CONFOEDERATIO HELVETICA”, the Latin name of the Swiss Confederation, curves around the coin with the date “1979” at the foot between small ornaments.

On the reverse, the value “10” is set at the centre within an open wreath of oak leaves and acorns tied with a ribbon at the base, framed by a beaded rim.
