The 5 francs is the highest-value everyday coin of the Swiss franc, carrying the well-known Alpine herdsman design first used in 1922. This 1949 example was struck in silver, before the alloy changed to copper-nickel in 1968, and has a bright white colour, a weighty feel and protective edge lettering.

On the obverse is the profile bust of an Alpine herdsman, a strong mountain figure often associated in popular imagination with William Tell. The Latin legend “CONFOEDERATIO HELVETICA” surrounds the portrait, with the designer’s signature below the shoulder.

On the reverse, the value “5 FR.” appears above the Swiss shield with its white cross, set within a wreath of Alpine flowers, the year 1949 and the mint letter B for Bern at the base. The edge is inscribed “DOMINUS PROVIDEBIT” with thirteen stars.
