The 50 rappen, or half franc, is one of the smaller silver-coloured coins of the Swiss Confederation. Once struck in silver, it has long been minted in cupro-nickel and shares the standing Helvetia design of the higher franc denominations. This example has a reeded edge and is dated 1980.

On the obverse stands the allegorical figure of Helvetia in classical robes, holding a long spear in one hand and resting the other on a shield bearing the Swiss cross. The name “HELVETIA” is inscribed in the exergue below, the field is ringed by stars for the cantons, and the designer’s signature “A. BOVY” appears at her feet.

On the reverse, the value “½ Fr.” and the date “1980” are set within an open wreath of alpine flowers, oak leaves and acorns bound at the base, matching the garland used across the Swiss franc series.
