1.000 Baht Baht / Tical (Issued 2018)

The Grand Palace complex in Bangkok has served as the ceremonial heart of the Thai monarchy for over two centuries, and its symbolic weight makes it a natural presence on Thailand’s highest-denomination banknote. The 1,000 Baht note of 2018 was issued to mark the reign of a new monarch and carries with it the authority and visual language of the Royal Thai state. It circulates as a current issue and represents the most significant everyday denomination in the Thai currency system. Its design draws together portraiture, royal symbolism, and contemporary security engineering in a single composition of considerable refinement.

On the front, the central portrait depicts King Vajiralongkorn — Rama X of Thailand — rendered in a finely engraved intaglio style that gives the image depth and tactile texture. The King is shown in formal military dress, decorated with royal insignia and medals, his uniform detailed with elaborate embroidery and epaulettes. The portrait is set within a circular guilloché frame of considerable intricacy, surrounded by delicate lathe-work patterns that radiate outward across the note’s pale golden and rose-cream background. To the upper left, a serial number is printed in dark red numerals alongside Thai script numerals, while a vertical green security strip with colour-shifting properties runs near the centre of the note. To the upper right, the Garuda emblem of the Thai royal household appears in deep red, flanked by ornate geometric borders. A floral rosette with colour-shifting ink in gold and green occupies the right-centre field, and the denomination “1000” is printed prominently in large numerals across the lower portion of the note in a rich reddish-brown. Thai script text naming the Bank of Thailand and stating the denomination in words appears in the central field below the portrait, while two authorising signatures are printed in black in the lower-left area. The serial number “2A1607940” is visible in the upper right in red ink. Intricate background guilloché patterns in pale lilac and cream cover the entire surface, with lotus motifs woven into the underlying design.

The reverse presents a dual portrait composition of great ceremonial significance: the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej — Rama IX — stands on the left, depicted in formal royal regalia with elaborate golden decorations and military honours, while King Vajiralongkorn — Rama X — stands to his right in similarly formal attire, the two monarchs shown together to symbolise dynastic continuity and the transition of the Thai crown. Both portraits are rendered in finely detailed intaglio engraving against a warm golden-ochre guilloché background of swirling lathe-work patterns. The denomination “1000” appears in large stylised Thai numerals across the lower centre of the note, and a line of Thai script text runs along the lower margin, serving as an anti-counterfeiting notice. The Garuda emblem appears in the upper left, and a circular seal or royal badge is positioned in the upper right. To the left of the dual portrait, a small vignette scene depicts a figure engaged in what appears to be an agricultural or artisanal activity, referencing royal development projects, while a corresponding vignette on the right shows figures examining documents or maps, echoing themes of royal initiative and national progress. The overall colour palette of the reverse is dominated by warm amber, gold, and brown tones, with subtle watermark ghost images visible in the paper when held to light.
