10 Baht Baht / Tical (Issued 1995)
Intaglio printing — the raised, tactile ink technique that dominated high-security banknote production through the latter decades of the twentieth century — is clearly evident across the surface of this 1995 Thai ten-baht note, producing the sharp tonal contrasts and crisp linework that distinguish professionally engraved currency from simpler lithographic output. The Bank of Thailand’s notes of this period employed multi-pass printing combining intaglio portraiture with offset background patterns, a combination that made unauthorised reproduction extremely difficult using the reprographic equipment available at the time. Guilloché engine-turning, a mechanical engraving technique yielding intricate repetitive geometric lattices, fills the border and field areas with a density of fine lines impossible to replicate cleanly on photocopiers of the era. The combined result is a note of considerable visual sophistication that repays close examination of its layered security architecture.
On the front, the dominant feature is a formal portrait of King Bhumibol Adulyadej — Rama IX, the longest-reigning monarch in Thai history — rendered in finely engraved intaglio to the right of centre. The portrait presents the King in military dress uniform adorned with multiple medal decorations and insignia, and he wears his characteristic dark-framed spectacles. The engraving captures fine detail in the uniform’s high collar and braiding, and the tonal graduation across the face and shoulders demonstrates the skill of the plate engravers. The overall colour scheme of the front is a warm brownish-tan against a cream-coloured paper, with the portrait area rendered in darker brown tones. To the upper left of the note appears the Garuda emblem — the mythological bird deity that serves as the royal coat of arms of Thailand — engraved in a circular cartouche. Central Thai script text, described in English as the name of the Thai government and the issuing authority, appears prominently in larger characters across the upper-centre of the note, with a second line of Thai script giving the denomination name in words. The numeral 10 appears in the lower right corner in a bold serif typeface, and a further rendition of the serial number — 1 B 4908559 — is printed in dark ink across the upper portion of the note. Two printed signatures of senior Bank of Thailand officials appear in the lower-centre area beneath the issuing authority text. An additional line of Thai script text runs along the lower edge of the note, which in translation refers to the anniversary of Bangkok. The background field to the left of the portrait features radiating fine-line guilloché work emanating from a central sunburst motif, overlaid with intricate floral and geometric border patterns in the traditional Thai decorative style. A circular security device incorporating a gear-wheel or rosette pattern is visible in orange-red ink within the lower-left quadrant of the face, and the serial number is repeated in Thai numerals along the lower edge, corresponding to the Arabic numeral serial printed above.
The reverse is printed predominantly in a reddish-brown and tan palette and features, as its central image, a detailed intaglio engraving of an equestrian statue set upon a stepped stone plinth. The statue depicts a uniformed figure on horseback — identifiable as the monument to King Chulalongkorn (Rama V), one of Thailand’s most revered monarchs, whose equestrian statue stands at the Royal Plaza in Bangkok. The horse is shown in a proud, forward-stepping pose, and the rider wears a peaked military hat and formal uniform, holding the reins with composed authority. Fine radiating lines emanate from behind the statue in a sunburst arrangement, giving the central composition a luminous, ceremonial quality. Traditional Thai decorative motifs — elongated flame-shaped floral ornaments and layered foliate borders — frame the lower portion of the central image. The Garuda emblem reappears in the upper right corner within a decorative cartouche, mirroring its placement on the front. To the upper left, a circular rosette or gear motif in orange-brown ink echoes the security rosette visible on the face side. The denomination numeral 10 appears in the lower left corner and again in smaller form at the lower right, with a further instance of the denomination appearing in the upper left area. The overall border is composed of dense guilloché latticework in the same reddish-brown tone, providing a consistent and visually coherent frame around the central composition. The paper shows a clean, slightly textured surface consistent with the cotton-fibre security paper used for Thai banknotes of this issue.
