20 Baht Baht / Tical (Issued 2017)

Thailand’s export-driven economy — built upon automotive manufacturing, electronics, agricultural produce including rice and rubber, and a thriving tourism sector — relied heavily on everyday transactional currency such as the 20 Baht note to facilitate commerce across both urban centres and rural communities. The Thai Baht has long served as the backbone of domestic trade across the Kingdom, circulating through markets, transport networks, and small businesses that collectively underpin one of Southeast Asia’s most dynamic economies. Issued in 2017 as part of the general circulation series, this note entered use during a period of monetary transition following the passing of King Bhumibol Adulyadej in 2016, making it one of the final commemorative-style issues to carry his portrait. The note reflects the Bank of Thailand’s longstanding tradition of honouring the monarchy through the design of its currency.

On the front, the dominant feature is a highly detailed portrait of King Bhumibol Adulyadej — Rama IX, the ninth monarch of the Chakri Dynasty and the longest-reigning king in Thai history — rendered in fine intaglio engraving to the right of centre. The portrait presents the King in a formal dark jacket, wearing his characteristic black-rimmed spectacles, with his expression serene and authoritative. The engraving achieves considerable depth, with precise line work conveying the texture of fabric and the subtle modelling of facial features. To the upper left, the Garuda emblem — the mythological bird and royal symbol of Thailand — is printed in a golden-green tone, flanked by fine guilloché patterning that extends across the upper portion of the note in pale green and yellow hues. Thai script text, indicating the issuing authority of the Bank of Thailand, appears prominently in the upper central area, with a further line of smaller Thai script text running beneath it. The large denomination numeral in Thai script characters is printed centrally in dark olive-green ink, providing immediate visual identification of the note’s value. To the upper right, the numeral “20” is printed in bold orange ink, with the Thai denomination text in smaller orange script immediately below it. A vertical security thread is embedded within the paper, visible as a dark metallic strip running through the left-centre of the note. Two facsimile signatures appear below the central denomination characters, accompanied by two lines of Thai script text identifying the signatories’ titles. A decorative floral and scroll motif in dark green occupies the lower-left area, providing an ornate flourish typical of Thai banknote design tradition. Two small decorative star-like elements appear to the right of centre in black ink. The serial number “7 K 3490518” is printed in green ink along the lower right, with a second serial reference in red Thai numerals running along the upper left edge. The overall colour palette of the front is a cool mint green and pale yellow, with accents of orange and dark green providing visual contrast.

The reverse presents a further engraved portrait of King Bhumibol Adulyadej in a younger, informal depiction, shown from the waist upwards in a grey-toned intaglio rendering at the centre of the note. Behind and to the left of this portrait, a detailed scene depicts the King engaged in what appears to be a royal development project, surrounded by a group of children and mothers — a reference to his renowned rural development and public welfare programmes conducted throughout his reign. This scene is rendered in green intaglio with considerable narrative detail. To the far left, additional figures and a building or rural landscape scene are visible in finely engraved green tones, extending the documentary quality of the reverse design. In the lower left, the large Thai numeral denomination characters appear again in deep teal-green ink. A horizontal band of Thai script text runs along the lower portion of the note, recording the King’s full royal name and reign dates, printed in small but legible green typography. To the right of centre, a vertical security strip with repeating printed elements is clearly visible. In the lower right, a detailed vignette features what appears to be a mythological Naga serpent figure rendered in green, accompanied by a small white rabbit — elements drawn from Thai royal and cultural iconography. A decorative roundel device appears in the lower left of the denomination numeral area. The Garuda emblem appears again in the upper left of the reverse, and the numeral “20” with Thai script denomination text is reproduced in teal-green in the upper right. The background throughout the reverse features subtle guilloché patterning in pale green and cream tones, providing security against reproduction while adding visual elegance consistent with the note’s ceremonial character.
