5 Cents Baht / Tical (Issued 1970)
Issued during the Vietnam War era, this Five Cents coupon note reflects Thailand’s direct involvement in the conflict, produced specifically for Thai military personnel serving in the Republic of Vietnam. The note carries a distinctly functional character, combining Thai decorative artistic traditions with a plain, utilitarian print format intended for restricted military use rather than civilian circulation. Its design blends royal Thai ornamentation with the practical markings of a restricted payment instrument, making it a striking document of both military history and Thai national identity. The legend printed across the note makes its purpose and limitation entirely clear from the outset.
On the front, the central design is dominated by a shield-shaped emblem bearing the word “SEAHORSE” across its top band, beneath which a seahorse figure is depicted against a background of stylised waves, rendered in a bold, engraved line style. To the upper left of the note, an elaborate decorative panel featuring traditional Thai flame and foliage ornamentation — characteristic of classical Thai temple art — occupies a large portion of the corner, with a winged anchor emblem positioned within the upper section of this decorative device. The overall colour of the note is a pale buff or cream tone, printed in dark olive-brown ink throughout. In the upper right corner, a numeral “5” appears in Thai script numerals. To the right of the central shield, two lines of Thai script text appear, which in English read as a phrase indicating exclusive use for Thai soldiers in the Republic of Vietnam. Below the shield, on the left side, further Thai script text appears alongside the phrase “NON NEGOTIABLE” printed in plain bold Latin capitals, reinforcing the restricted, non-transferable status of the instrument. The word “Coupon” is printed in a cursive script typeface at the centre of the note beneath the shield. Along the lower edge, a dark banner carries the denomination text “FIVE CENTS” in large, bold, serifed capital letters. To the lower right, a circular device encloses the word “FIVE” in capital letters, surrounded by fine geometric patterning. The numeral “5” also appears in the lower left corner. No portrait of any individual appears on this note.
The reverse of this coupon note presents an almost identical printed design to the front, featuring the same layout and all the same design elements reproduced in the same pale buff paper stock and dark olive-brown ink. The shield bearing the “SEAHORSE” motif with the stylised seahorse and wave background is again centrally positioned, flanked by the same Thai script text to the right and the same decorative Thai flame-and-foliage ornamental panel occupying the upper left corner, with the winged anchor device set within it. The “NON NEGOTIABLE” text and the Thai script inscription appear in their same respective positions, and the “Coupon” cursive text is again present centrally. The “FIVE CENTS” denomination banner runs along the lower edge in identical bold serifed lettering, and the circular “FIVE” device appears in the lower right. The numeral “5” is visible in both the upper right in Thai script and the lower left corner. The printing on the reverse shows slight show-through from the front face, consistent with the lightweight, uncoated paper stock used in the production of these military payment coupons.
