5 Satang Thailand (Issued 1946)

The 5 satang was a small low-value coin of Thailand’s baht system, one hundred satang making a baht. This issue, dated B.E. 2489 (1946), belongs to the reign of the young King Ananda Mahidol, Rama VIII, and was struck in a dark base metal for everyday minor transactions. It is a small, lightweight piece with a plain edge.

On the obverse appears the bust of the young King Ananda Mahidol facing left in uniform, with Thai inscriptions in the field to either side naming the monarch.

On the reverse, the mythical Garuda is shown with wings outspread, the royal emblem of Thailand, above the Thai numeral “๕” (5). The legend “รัฐบาลไทย” (Government of Thailand) arches over the top and the Buddhist-era date runs across the foot.
