50 Baht Baht / Tical (Issued 2000)

The 50 Baht note issued in 2000 remains part of Thailand’s current legal tender series and continues to circulate alongside later issues in the same denomination. This particular issue was produced to mark a significant royal anniversary and forms part of the broader General Issue series that has been the backbone of Thai paper currency for decades. The note retains its status as a valid banknote and is widely recognised within the Thai monetary system. Holders of this note visiting or returning from Thailand should be aware that its exchangeability outside the country depends on the policies of individual currency exchange providers.

On the front, the dominant feature is a double portrait of King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX) of Thailand alongside Queen Sirikit, rendered in a detailed intaglio engraving style that gives the figures a raised, tactile quality. The King is depicted in profile and three-quarter view, wearing dark attire and his characteristic spectacles, while the Queen appears beside him wearing a traditional Thai ceremonial headdress and formal dress. The pair are presented in a warm, golden-orange and amber colour palette that washes across the central and right portions of the note. To the left of the royal double portrait, a secondary vignette in lighter engraving depicts a scene of the King engaged with subjects in what appears to be a rural or ceremonial setting, consistent with his well-documented royal development projects. In the upper left, Thai script text identifies the issuing authority — the Royal Thai Government — along with the denomination written in Thai script reading fifty baht. The numeral “50” appears prominently in the lower right corner in a stylised, decorative form with visible guilloché patterning within the figures. A serial number reading 9 R 163879 is printed in dark ink to the lower right. In the upper right corner, a transparent polymer window contains a small colour portrait of Queen Sirikit, framed by fine rainbow-coloured guilloché lines and a Garuda emblem — the royal symbol of Thailand — printed in green to its left. Two facsimile signatures of Thai government officials appear along the lower centre of the note. The overall background is composed of layered guilloché rosettes and fine-line geometric patterns in gold, amber and pale yellow, typical of high-security polymer banknote production. The note is printed on polymer substrate, giving it a distinctive smooth, slightly translucent feel compared to paper currency.

The reverse of the note is dominated by a large central engraved vignette depicting King Bhumibol Adulyadej seated on the floor in informal dress, leaning forward attentively towards a seated woman who appears to be demonstrating or discussing something with him, with a third figure also present. The scene evokes the King’s personal engagement with the Thai people and his rural development initiatives. The central image is rendered in warm ochre, brown and pale rose tones. In the upper left corner, a smaller vignette shows the King and Queen together in what appears to be an informal setting, accompanied by an image of a colonial-style building rendered in blue-grey tones, possibly a regional administrative or royal residence. In the lower left, a further vignette depicts a family group — adults and children — seated together, rendered in muted purple and brown tones. In the upper right corner, another small scene shows the King engaged with what appears to be a technical or scientific instrument, emphasising his interest in development and innovation. Two lines of Thai script text appear along the lower centre of the note, marking the royal anniversary commemorated by this issue. The denomination numeral “50” is repeated in the lower right corner in the same stylised guilloché form seen on the front. A large rectangular clear window — the polymer transparency zone — is visible on the right side of the note as a security and authentication feature inherent to the polymer substrate. The Garuda royal emblem appears in fine engraving at the top centre of the reverse. The overall colour scheme of the reverse transitions through warm amber, gold and pale ochre tones, unified by a background of intricate fine-line guilloché patterns throughout.
