500 Baht Baht / Tical (Issued 2013-2016)

Few currencies speak as directly to a nation’s reverence for its monarchy as Thailand’s Baht series, and the 500 Baht note issued between 2013 and 2016 is a vivid expression of that devotion. The design draws together the living institution of the royal household with the deep historical legacy of earlier Thai rulers, weaving centuries of royal identity into a single piece of currency. The predominant violet and purple tones give the note a dignified, ceremonial quality that reflects the solemnity with which Thailand regards its royal traditions. Together, the imagery and craftsmanship of this note communicate a culture in which monarchy, history, and national pride are inseparable.

On the front, the central and dominant feature is a formal portrait of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, Rama IX, rendered in detailed intaglio engraving that captures his characteristic spectacles, composed expression, and royal regalia. The portrait is positioned to the right of centre and is surrounded by fine guilloché patterning in pale violet and lilac tones, which extends across much of the note’s surface in interlocking geometric waves. To the upper left, Thai script text identifies the issuing authority, the Bank of Thailand, rendered in clean letterpress typography. Below this, a line of smaller Thai script text runs horizontally across the note. The large numeral denomination “500” appears prominently in the upper right corner in bold purple ink, accompanied by Thai numeral script text reading the denomination in Thai. A second large stylised Thai-numeral rendition of “500” is printed in the lower left area in a paler, watermark-style impression that gives the note visual depth. Decorative floral elements, including lotus-like motifs in orange and gold tones, are visible in the lower left region, adding warmth to the otherwise cool violet palette. To the right of the portrait sits an ornate emblem, appearing to depict a royal architectural motif or insignia rendered in green, gold, and purple, enclosed within a shield-like frame. Two facsimile signatures appear beneath the central denomination text, printed in black ink. A security serial number, reading 1 A 1142121, is printed in red in the lower right corner. A vertical security strip is embedded in the note to the right of the portrait area, visible as a thin integrated thread running through the substrate.

The reverse of the note is dominated by a large engraved scene centred on a seated statue of King Ramkhamhaeng the Great, the revered 13th-century monarch of the Sukhothai Kingdom, depicted in traditional regalia including a pointed crown, holding what appears to be a staff or sceptre, and seated upon a throne. The statue is rendered in fine intaglio line work in blue-grey and violet tones. Behind the statue, an architectural panorama depicts temple structures associated with Thai royal heritage, including tiered spires and gateway elements characteristic of a grand wat complex, all rendered in pale violet and blue engraving. To the upper left of the reverse, Thai script text and a small royal emblem are printed in dark ink. The large Thai-numeral “500” appears in the lower left in a stylised script form, repeating the denomination in the same bold purple used on the front. To the right, the Arabic numeral “500” is printed in large bold purple figures. A vertical strip of green security features, appearing as a series of square optical elements or colour-shifting security marks, runs along the right-centre portion of the note. Fine decorative border work in Thai classical style frames the lower edge of the reverse, incorporating repeating floral and scrollwork patterns in muted violet. The overall composition of the reverse balances historical grandeur with detailed craftsmanship, presenting Thailand’s Sukhothai heritage alongside the architectural beauty of its royal temples.
