1 Dollar Dollar (Issued 2006)

The scarlet ibis, Trinidad and Tobago’s national bird, has long stood as one of the most powerful symbols of the twin-island republic’s natural heritage and cultural identity. Printed on the one dollar note of the Central Bank of Trinidad and Tobago, this striking bird represented the pride of a young Caribbean nation that had gained independence in 1962 and was building its own monetary institutions and national iconography. The series spanning 1964 to 2000, with this final 2006 issue concluding that design lineage, carried these images across decades of daily commerce for the people of Trinidad and Tobago. Now withdrawn from circulation, this note remains a tangible record of the country’s visual identity during a formative era in its history.

On the front, the dominant imagery is a finely engraved depiction of two scarlet ibises rendered in deep crimson and rust tones, standing together in a naturalistic pose to the left of centre against a lightly tinted background. The birds are drawn with careful attention to plumage detail, their long curved beaks and slender legs clearly defined through precise intaglio-style engraving. To the right of the ibises sits the central coat of arms of Trinidad and Tobago, presented within an ornate circular frame: the shield displays a sailing ship on the sea beneath a helmet crest, flanked by the two national birds — the scarlet ibis and the cocrico — and supported by decorative foliage beneath. The text “CENTRAL BANK OF TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO” arches prominently across the top of the note in bold serif lettering against the red and pink guilloche background, whilst the denomination “ONE DOLLAR” appears in clear capital lettering along the lower centre. The numeral “1” is printed in large format at both the upper left and upper right corners. A vertical security strip runs through the paper near the centre of the note. The serial number DY762246 is printed in red to the lower left and repeated vertically along the right edge. To the right of the coat of arms sits an intricate rosette pattern composed of fine geometric latticework in blue and pink tones. The note carries a printed signature above the title “GOVERNOR” to the right of centre, along with the statutory text “ISSUED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CENTRAL BANK ACT CHAP 79.02” and the designation “SERIES 2006” in small print near the lower left. The overall colour palette is dominated by shades of red, crimson, and rose, with pale cream paper giving contrast to the inked design elements.

The reverse of the note is dominated by a detailed engraved illustration of the Central Bank of Trinidad and Tobago’s headquarters building, a tall modernist tower rendered in precise linework against a pale background. The building is depicted with its full multi-storey façade, showing rectangular window arrangements across its height, with lower annexe structures visible at its base. To the right of the bank building, a second vignette depicts an industrial facility, identifiable as a petrochemical or oil refinery installation, with tall stacks, tanks, and processing infrastructure illustrated in the same fine engraving style. These two images together reflect the twin pillars of the country’s modern economy — its financial institutions and its hydrocarbon industry. The denomination “$1” appears in bold numerals at the upper left, upper right, and lower right of the reverse. The text “CENTRAL BANK OF TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO” runs along the lower portion of the note in serif capitals. Colourful holographic or iridescent oval elements are visible along the left side of the reverse, displaying shifting colours of blue, green, and gold that serve as a security feature. Further guilloche rosette patterns in blue and pink appear in the lower left corner, echoing the decorative elements found on the front. The overall toning of the reverse continues the red and pale cream palette of the obverse, maintaining a consistent visual identity across both faces of the note.
