The 1 kuruş is the smallest denomination of the modern Turkish lira, worth one hundredth of a lira. Introduced with the new lira in 2009, it is a small coin struck in brass with a warm golden colour, a light feel and a plain edge.
On the obverse appears a portrait of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the Republic of Turkey, facing left, encircled by the legend “TÜRKIYE CUMHURIYETI” (Republic of Turkey).
On the reverse, a large numeral 1 sits beside a snowdrop flower, with the word “KURUŞ” and the year 2023 below, and a crescent and star at the top. The floral motif is part of the flower-and-tree theme running through this Turkish coin series.
