100 Türk Lirası Turkish Lira (Issued 1970)
Turkey in 1970 was governed under the constitutional framework established after the military intervention of 1960, with Süleyman Demirel leading the Justice Party government during a period of significant political tension that would culminate in the military memorandum of 1971. The country was navigating rapid industrialisation, labour unrest, and ideological polarisation between left and right-wing factions. It was against this turbulent backdrop that the Central Bank of Turkey — Türkiye Cumhuriyet Merkez Bankası — issued this 100 Türk Lirası note under the legislative authority cited directly on the face of the note, referencing the relevant law and date of issue.
On the front, the dominant feature is a finely engraved portrait of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder and first President of the Turkish Republic, positioned to the right of centre. The portrait is rendered in a dark olive-brown engraving with exceptional tonal depth, showing Atatürk in a formal suit and tie, facing slightly to the left of the viewer, with characteristic strong features and a composed, authoritative expression. The background to the right side of the note carries an intricate pattern of stylised floral and foliate motifs in muted greens and browns, with diamond-shaped decorative panels framing the portrait area. The left half of the note is dominated by a large guilloché rosette rendered in pale olive-gold tones, incorporating a bold numeral “100” at its centre and radiating fine-line geometric latticework outward. Above the central area, the issuing authority is printed in bold Latin-script capital letters reading “TÜRKIYE CUMHURIYET MERKEZ BANKASI” across the top of the note. Beneath this heading, the denomination is stated prominently in large bold typography as “YUZ” on one line and “TÜRK LIRASI” directly below, in dark brown ink. A central band of text references the legal authority under which the note was issued, citing the date 14 Ocak 1970 and the relevant law number. Two facsimile signatures of bank officials appear in the central lower area beneath the denomination text. The serial number “F70 352029” appears twice — once in the upper left area and again in the lower right — printed in deep reddish-brown ink. The lower portion of the note features an additional large numeral “100” rendered in dark intaglio print, flanked by further guilloché border patterns incorporating stylised floral and geometric designs in greens, browns, and golds. The overall paper has a warm cream tone, and the combination of intaglio engraving and offset printing creates pronounced tactile relief across the surface.
The reverse of the note is centred on a large, photogravure-style depiction of Mount Ararat — the iconic snow-capped volcanic peak that has long served as a national symbol of Turkey — rendered in tones of grey, brown, and pale ochre against a lightly shaded sky. The mountain dominates the central and upper portion of the reverse, its cone rising sharply with detailed rendering of snow fields and rocky ridges descending to a broad base. The issuing bank name, “TÜRKIYE CUMHURIYET MERKEZ BANKASI”, is printed in dark brown capital letters along the top margin of the reverse. Along the lower edge, the denomination text “YUZ TÜRK LIRASI” is printed centrally in bold dark lettering. The left side of the reverse carries a large bold “100” numeral in dark reddish-brown intaglio, surrounded by ornate guilloché border work in blue, brown, and gold. The right side features a matching smaller “100” numeral framed within further decorative panel work. Geometric border patterns in repeating diamond and interlace motifs run along the top and bottom edges in muted gold and brown tones, giving the reverse a structured and formally balanced composition. The serial number shows faintly in mirror image from the front of the note, visible as show-through in the lighter areas of the paper. The overall paper texture is firm and slightly textured, consistent with the high-quality security printing standards of the period.
