50.000 Türk Lirası Turkish Lira (Issued 1970)

Watermark protection and embedded security threading were central anti-counterfeiting measures applied to Turkish banknotes of this inflation-era series, issued under the authority of the Central Bank of Turkey in accordance with the law dated 14 January 1970. The note carries a serial number printed in two positions, providing an additional layer of authenticity verification that was considered robust for its period. These features reflected the Turkish monetary authority’s ongoing efforts to maintain the integrity of circulating currency during a time of significant economic pressure. The note was eventually withdrawn from circulation as successive denominations climbed to reflect the chronic inflation that characterised Turkey’s currency in the late twentieth century.

On the front, the dominant feature is the engraved portrait of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, founder and first President of the Turkish Republic, rendered in fine intaglio engraving to the right of centre and occupying a substantial portion of the note’s face. The portrait shows Atatürk in a dark suit with a white shirt and bow tie, facing three-quarters to the left, his expression composed and authoritative. The engraving is executed with considerable detail, capturing the contours of his face, the texture of his collar, and the graduation of tone across his jacket through dense line work characteristic of security printing of this era. The background to the left side of the note features an intricate geometric and guilloché pattern incorporating a large star-and-medallion motif rendered in terracotta orange and pale green against a cream ground, with delicate interlocking lattice work surrounding it that extends vertically along the left margin. The issuing authority’s name appears along the top of the note in Latin-script uppercase lettering reading Turkiye Cumhuriyet Merkez Bankasi. The denomination is stated centrally in two forms: the Turkish phrase Elli Bin appears above the large bold numeral 50000, which is itself followed by the words Turk Lirasi, all printed in dark ink with strong typographic presence. The serial number C82 813881 appears twice, once in the upper left and once in the lower right, printed in black. Below the central denomination text, a line of smaller Latin-script text references the legal authority of the issue, citing the date 14 Ocak 1970 and the law number 1211. Two signature lines appear beneath this text, labelled Baskan and Baskan Yardimcisi respectively, with cursive signatures rendered in printed facsimile. The numeral 50000 is repeated vertically in light tonal printing along the far right margin.

The reverse presents a finely engraved vignette of a large neoclassical government building, understood to be the Turkish Grand National Assembly in Ankara, depicted in a central composition rendered in shades of dark green and grey-green. The building is shown frontally, with a symmetrical facade of multiple window bays, a central entrance approached by a broad staircase, and a flagpole at the roofline from which a flag is visible. Flanking the building on the left side of the composition is a sculptural group showing standing figures, one of which appears to carry a sheaf or bundle, rendered in the same engraved style as the architecture. The foreground shows a paved forecourt with decorative plantings. The issuing bank name Turkiye Cumhuriyet Merkez Bankasi appears along the top of the reverse in the same uppercase Latin-script lettering as the front. Along the lower edge, the denomination is restated as 50000 Elli Bin Turk Lirasi in bold printed text. To the right of the central vignette, a vertical decorative panel repeats the star-and-medallion guilloché motif seen on the front, incorporating the same terracotta orange and pale green colouring with surrounding geometric latticework and small star ornaments arranged vertically. The numeral 50000 appears in the upper right corner of the reverse. The overall colour palette of the reverse is dominated by green tones, with the decorative side panel providing warm contrast.
