50 Hriven’ Hryvnia / Karbovanets (Issued 2004-2014)

The 50 Hriven’ banknote issued between 2004 and 2014 represents a period of consolidation for Ukraine’s independent currency following the nation’s transition to the hryvnia in 1996. This denomination circulated widely throughout the early twenty-first century, serving as a standard medium of exchange for everyday transactions across Ukrainian commerce and financial institutions. The note reflects the design standards established by the National Bank of Ukraine during a decade of economic development and currency stabilisation. Its production and circulation underscored the hryvnia’s role as a fundamental symbol of Ukrainian monetary independence.

On the front, the banknote features a detailed portrait of a bearded gentleman rendered in fine line engraving, positioned towards the right side of the note. The figure displays distinctive facial features including a full, flowing beard and defined facial structure, executed in the classical engraving style characteristic of security banknotes. The dominant colour palette consists of purple and violet tones, with intricate guilloché patterns and linear hatching creating depth throughout the composition. The National Bank of Ukraine name appears in Cyrillic script at the upper left, whilst the denomination “50” is prominently displayed in the bottom left corner within a circular security feature. The right edge of the note incorporates vertical text reading “П’ЯТДЕСЯТ ГРИВЕНЬ” (Fifty Hryvnia) in Ukrainian, with the numeral “50” repeated vertically along the right margin. A security strip runs vertically through the design, and decorative floral and geometric elements frame the portrait in subtle purple tones.

The reverse features a substantial architectural structure positioned centrally, displaying classical institutional design with a domed roof and flagpole flying the Ukrainian national flag. Two standing figures appear on either side of this building, rendered in light purple tones that blend into the overall composition. The left margin contains a vertically oriented “50” denomination marker within decorative framing. Serial numbers appear in two locations: “ДР2436899” is visible on both the left side and bottom right of the note. The year “2004” is printed in the lower portion near the right side. The entire reverse maintains the cohesive purple and violet colour scheme, with fine line patterns and guilloché work creating texture throughout. Watermark elements and security features are integrated into the paper structure, visible as subtle variations in the background printing.
