1,000 Pesos Uruguayo Peso (Issued 2015–2021)

Intaglio printing, offset lithography, and advanced security thread technology characterise the production standards of banknotes issued during the 2015–2021 period, and all of these techniques are clearly evident in the 1,000 Pesos Uruguayos note. The fine engraved lines of the portrait and lettering demonstrate the depth and tactile quality that intaglio pressing delivers, while the layered multicolour background reflects sophisticated offset work. Guilloché micropatterns, visible across much of the note’s surface, were generated using the high-precision geometric machinery standard in contemporary central bank printing. Together, these elements create a document that meets the anti-counterfeiting demands expected of a denomination at the top of the Uruguayan series.

On the front, the dominant feature is a finely engraved portrait of Juana de Ibarbourou, the celebrated Uruguayan poet and national literary icon who was declared “Juana de América” in 1929 in recognition of her continental cultural standing. Her portrait occupies the right-centre of the note and is rendered with the characteristic tonal depth of intaglio engraving, with fine cross-hatched shading defining her facial features, hair, and the collar of her dress. She is depicted facing slightly to the left, wearing a necklace, and the portrait is framed against a pale green and cream background filled with intricate guilloché patterning. To the upper centre, the issuing authority is identified in bold serif typography as “Banco Central del Uruguay,” with “del” set in a smaller intermediate line between the two larger words. The national coat of arms of Uruguay appears centrally near the top of the note, rendered in green ink with visible engraved detail. The denomination is stated multiple times across the note: “$1,000” appears in the upper left and upper right corners, “PESOS URUGUAYOS” runs across the centre of the note in clear capital lettering, and the word “MIL” appears prominently in large bold serif type in the lower-centre area. Below that, “MONEDA NACIONAL” is printed in a smaller but clear serif typeface. The serial number 02495438 appears in the lower right in red numerals, and a vertical serial number reading 02495438 also appears on the left edge in green. The series designation “Serie E” is printed in the lower left. The year “2015” is visible on the right side of the note. A security strip is embedded vertically through the note, visible as a dark metallic thread running through the paper. To the upper right, a colour-shifting or optically variable security element is present, appearing as a rectangular patch in brown and gold tones with an irregular shape suggestive of a map or emblem. The left edge of the note carries a watermark zone, and the overall colour palette across the front is dominated by soft greens, pale yellows, and light rose-pink tones, with the engraved elements rendered in darker olive green.

The reverse presents a richly illustrated scene connected directly to Juana de Ibarbourou’s literary legacy. On the left-hand side, a tall stack of books is depicted in engraved detail, their spines clearly rendered with legible titles referencing several of her published works, including “Charnela,” “Raíz salvaje,” “Perdida,” and others from her body of writing. A tall, slender palm tree rises prominently from behind or beside the stack of books, its fronds spreading across the upper portion of the composition in fine engraved lines with warm golden-brown ink. Below the palm, the inscription “LA PALMA DE JUANA” appears in a banner or cartouche, directly referencing the poet’s iconic epithet. To the right of the central composition, a reproduction of what appears to be a handwritten dedication or poetic inscription is printed in cursive script, evoking the manuscript culture associated with Ibarbourou’s work. A decorative vase or urn is visible in the mid-right area, rendered in green engraved lines. The bank name “Banco Central del Uruguay” repeats across the top in the same serif typography as the front, with “del” in the intermediate position. “PESOS URUGUAYOS” and “MIL” appear centrally, and “MONEDA NACIONAL” runs along the lower portion. The denomination “$1,000” appears in the upper left and lower right. The right-hand border of the reverse features a complex guilloché security panel with the word “URUGUAY” printed vertically in fine lettering, and an intricate rosette or micropattern design in pink and green. A small denomination indicator in pink microprint appears in the far upper right. The overall colour scheme of the reverse combines warm golds and olive browns for the central engraved imagery with the pale green and rose tones of the background security printing.
