500 Dong, Vietnam (Issued 2003)
The 500 dong was a low-value coin of the Vietnamese dong, one of the denominations in the coinage introduced in 2003. Struck in nickel-plated steel, it has a silvery colour, a light feel and a plain edge. Like the other Vietnamese coins of this series, it fell out of general use within a few years of issue.
On the obverse appears the national emblem of Vietnam — a golden star above a cogwheel and rice sheaves — with the legend “CỘNG HÒA XÃ HỘI CHỦ NGHĨA VIỆT NAM” (Socialist Republic of Vietnam) and the year 2003.
On the reverse, the value is shown as a large “500 ĐỒNG”, encircled by the name of the issuing State Bank of Vietnam, “NGÂN HÀNG NHÀ NƯỚC VIỆT NAM”.
